On the south side of Maui, it is a bit difficult to photograph a good sunrise, since the sun is rising directly behind a giant volcano (Haleakala), and most of the "southshore" is really facing west. I thought that maybe I could go far south, and get the sunrise around the south side of the volcano. I arrived at Big Beach early in the morning, around 6am, and shot this image of the huge expanse of beach without humans (which would be impossible at any other time of the day). The state parks have gates that are locked this early in the morning, so I had to park up on the roadside and hike down.
