The electric color of the moss growing around the moist area of the recently cut (only after the tree fell across the trail) redwood caught my eye. The heartwood is term for the wood towards the center of the tree, and that is the wood you see exposed here. The sapwood transports most of the water to the leaves of the tree, and that is why the moss is growing on that area. The sapwood still transports water for a short time even after the tree falls.
